In playing larger-than - life historical/ mythological figures on the big screen, Abhimanyu in Dana Veera Soora Karna, Jahangir in Akbar Salim Anarkali, Krishnadevaraya in Aditya 369 and the more recent Gautamiputra Satakarni-Balakrishna has always been popular. Balayya's fancy now looks like another such character is that of Gona Ganna Reddy, the celebrated 13th century warrior who was a close assistant to Kakatiya queen, Rani Rudrama Devi. " For a while now, Balayya has been trying to make a film about Gona Ganna Reddy. Because in the public domain, there is not much literature available on him, stuff never quite materialised. But the love of Balakrishna for the character has remained intact. The actor is determined this time to see it through," says a source close to the actor.
The talk about Balakrishna playing Gona Ganna Reddy first broke out in 2016. In both the film and the political circles of the two Telugu states, the prospect of the sitting MLA of AP's Hindupur playing a Telangana icon became a talking point. Although it didn't materialise then, this time around, the actor is not leaving it to chance. "To do research and flesh out a plot worth telling on the silver screen, Balayya roped in a team of writers. When he wraps up shooting his next film with Boyapati, coming in January or February, an official announcement will be made," the source says , adding, "A suitable director will be chosen to lead the project based on how the film plays out."
Most Telugu movie lovers will only have one question to ask whenever the announcement is made: Can Balayya defeat Allu Arjun's firebrand portrayal of Gona Ganna Reddy in Anushka's Rudhramadevi? Only time will tell.
