AP: Sacrilegious Installation Of Idol Ignites An Uproar
Category: Andhrapradesh

Srikalahasti: Uproar over attacks on Hindu temples has now taken a new turn with some unknown people clandestinely installing Shiva and Nandi idols alongside Kasi and Rameswara Shiva Lingas. The BJP and other opposition parties have launched an agitation, taking strong exception to the consequential steps taken by the temple authorities and the department of Endowments such as suspending the constable on duty. The Executive Officer has told them they will be fully reviewing the incident within 48 hours.

What added fuel to the fire is that since no employee or devotee could enter the temple without thorough screening how someone could take in and mount these idols, weighing around 7 kg each. The temple authorities can not duck the blame by claiming they don't know how it happened, claims the opposition parties. The solution is not to suspend a police officer on duty, the BJP and other party leaders said.

They said the temple authorities claim to have checked about them with the main priest but they admitted they didn't know about the incident until some devotees brought it to the authorities' attention. They also replaced the idols when the incident came to their attention. The BJP and the TDP contend that such an act would not be possible unless key people were involved in this case. They are seeking the EO's suspension and comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the temple management fired the private security agency and surrendered two home guards to the SP who were in service at the south gate when the idols were allegedly brought into the temple in big bags. Executive officer C Chandrasekhar Reddy said that the CCTV footage showed some people were carrying the bags through the south gate inside the temple on September 8. They also ordered an internal enquiry, he said. On Monday at the RJC office in Tirupati, BJP leaders G Bhanuprakash Reddy, Samanchi Srinivas and Kola Anand along with leaders Jana Sena held a protest. They demanded reaction from the CM in this matter and slogans were raised against the government.
